Owl and Human Relationship

Humans seem to be fascinated with owls but that only goes so far. They tend to love the look of them and the sounds that they make. The fact that they are often heard but not seen makes it a rare occasion when someone see an owl in the wild. Yet there are plenty of locations out there where the world of the human and the owl collide.

This is due to the fact that humans continue to move into the natural habitat of these animals as well as many others. They do so in order to be closer to nature or due to the fact that they can buy land for cheap. Then they complain though about owls in the area and want to get rid of them. They may cut down trees, use netting to keep them away from structures, and even use poisons.

The hunting of owls is very common as a means of getting them out of the way. Some humans will use traps and then release the owls into a new environment that is far away from the one they happen to be in. You will hear many reports out there of owls being a nuisance.

Some species of owls have been known to attack humans. This generally will only occur though when they feel that their own well being is threatened. Yet this has given them a very bad reputation in some areas. The stories about owls being evil and being a symbol of death to come have scared some people to the point of destroying any owl that they may come into contact with out of fear.

There are many places though where humans use owls to help them control different needs. For example in areas where people have problems with pigeons or other large flocks of birds, they will introduce a few owls. Since owls are solitary animals they won’t create the large numbers. They also don’t come out during the day or leave behind tons of droppings with acid that can damage property.

Another use for owls being introduced into particular environments is to control problems with rodents. Mice and rats are a huge part of the diet for most species of owls so this is a great method of keeping such pets at low numbers. Rodent problems can quickly get out of control if there isn’t a means of keeping the population low.

There are plenty of humans out there looking out for the future of owls though. They want to see their natural environment preserved so they take part in various conservation efforts. They lobby to the government to prevent the destruction of such habitats. They do their best to make it illegal for the hunting or harming of owls in various locations as well. By keeping a good eye on the population of owls they can also keep certain species from becoming extinct.

There are sanctuaries out there where injured owls are also taken to be cared for. Without such medical attention they would certainly die out there in the wild. The care they get at the sanctuary is usually conducted in order to eventually release them back into the wild. When that isn’t possible though the owls will remain in that location for the rest of their lives.

This process helps to keep the population of owls as high as possible. At the same time it gives researchers the change to observe these birds. A great deal of the observing is done with infrared cameras in place. Then the humans can see what is going on in another location through computer monitor screens.
