Owl Distribution

Owls Distribution and Home Range

Owls are found just about everywhere in the world, the one exception is Antarctica. These are very adaptable birds and so it isn’t surprising to learn that they have such a wide distribution out there in the world. Of course the specific species you will find out there does depend on the climate, food sources, and other variables.

You will find owls living in a variety of habitats as well. Some of them are found in trees in thick forest areas. However, others live in the open prairies where most people are surprised to find them. They do have a liking for older buildings such as barns, businesses, and even Churches.

Basically, owls are very versatile and they live just about anywhere. The specifics of where you will find them though really depends on the species you are interested in. They tend to take up residence on any area of land where they can find food and they can have shelter. It may surprise you to learn that some species such as the Burrowing Owl live under ground.

The large spruce trees are home to the Spotted Owls. The open woodlands is where you will find species including the Northern Hawk Owl living. There are hardwood forests out there that offer homes for the Gray Owl and Barred Owl. Only the Snowy Owl is able to live where there is frozen tundra though.

The temperature in an environment will influence the types of owls that are able to live there. They need to be able to stay warm enough. You will find that those owl species that can survive in the colder areas have one distinct feature in common. Take a look at their talons and you will discover they are covered with fur. This helps their bodies to retain the heat they need to stay comfortable.

Owls are one of the few birds in the world that don’t take part in the annual migration process. In some areas the owls do move to warmer climates such as those that are found in the North. For the most part though these birds are going to remain in their home location all year long. As long as they have enough food and shelter they aren’t likely to find a new home.

You will find that many species of owls have feathers that cover their feet. It is believed that this gives them enough warmth for the colder part of the year so that they don’t have to migrate.
